Great Outdoors in Hammond, Indiana
Hammond’s great outdoors offer an impressive variety of experiences, from Lake Michigan beaches and birdwatching to boating, golfing and waterfront recreation.
Along the Indiana–Illinois border, Wolf Lake Memorial Park anchors the city’s outdoor attractions with more than 400 acres of lakefront recreation, including kayaking, canoeing, boating, fishing, walking trails, picnic areas, a floating boardwalk and an aquatic play center. The lakefront also hosts concerts and festivals throughout the year, including the popular Festival of the Lakes.
Right across the street, Lost Marsh Golf Course provides an 18-hole public course overlooking Lake George, blending links-style and parkland design for a challenging yet welcoming round. Golfers can enjoy pristine fairways, fast greens, a driving range, on-site dining and even views of the Chicago skyline.
Along the shores of Lake Michigan, visitors can relax at Hammond Lakefront Beach, where miles of sandy shoreline, refreshing freshwater waves, seasonal lifeguards and dog-friendly areas create the perfect setting for a summer day by the water.
Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to explore throughout Hammond’s diverse natural landscapes. The Hammond Lakefront Park & Bird Sanctuary is a hidden gem along Lake Michigan, featuring a wooded wildlife refuge that serves as an important stopover for migratory birds traveling between Canada, Mexico, and Central America. Birdwatchers can follow rustic trails through the sanctuary in search of warblers, thrushes, sparrows, and other species rarely seen elsewhere in Northwest Indiana.
Adjacent to the sanctuary, Hammond Marina offers direct access to Lake Michigan, stunning waterfront views, and a boating season that runs from May through mid-October, making it an ideal launching point for both recreation and relaxation.
Further south, Gibson Woods Nature Preserve provides a peaceful escape into a unique ecosystem, with self-guided trails, native wildlife and educational programs offered through the Environmental Awareness Center.
Together, these outdoor destinations showcase the natural beauty and recreational opportunities that make Hammond a year-round destination for adventure, discovery and relaxation.
